Oil-based paint, which today mostly means synthetic alkyd rather than the natural-oil formulas of decades ago, still shows up on some trim, doors, and cabinetry, because a cured alkyd film dries harder and smoother than latex, closer to a factory finish than a hand-rolled one. That gap has been closing, though. Waterborne alkyd hybrids, Benjamin Moore’s ADVANCE line is one well-known example, split the difference: latex-style cleanup and lower odor, with a cured finish closer to traditional oil-based hardness.
One practical constraint that trips people up: oil-based paint shouldn’t go directly over a water-based coat without proper sanding and prep, because the two don’t bond the same way. Indoor Air Quality: What VOCs Actually Do Inside a Closed Room
VOCs, volatile organic compounds, are chemicals that evaporate out of a paint film as it dries and cures, and indoors they behave differently than outdoors, because a closed room traps what an open yard disperses. The EPA’s indoor air quality guidance notes that indoor VOC concentrations typically run higher than outdoor levels even under normal conditions, and during and shortly after an activity like painting, indoor levels can spike roughly a thousand times above that baseline.
Most of that release happens fast.
