I spent an embarrassing amount of time holding tint samples up to my living room window, trying to guess what “35%” would actually look like once it dried onto the glass. If you’re staring at a menu of 5%, 20%, 35%, 50%, and 70% with no idea which number belongs on which window, this is the post that sorts it out.

VLT stands for visible light transmission, and it’s the number that actually matters here. It measures the percentage of visible light that makes it through the glass and film together, not how “dark” or “cool” the tint looks from the driveway. A 25% VLT film lets 25% of daylight through; a 90% VLT film blocks only 10% of it. Lower number, darker room. Higher number, lighter room. That part is simple.
The part that trips people up, and the reason I’m writing this post, is UV blocking. UV blocking isn’t the same spec as VLT, and it isn’t tied to darkness: a film engineered to block UV does that job with a separate layer, so a nearly clear film can protect your skin almost as well as a dark one. Picking a VLT comes down to balancing privacy, glare, fade protection, and how much daylight a room needs, room by room. And no, residential tint doesn’t carry the kind of legal darkness limit your car does.
What the VLT Number Is Actually Measuring
VLT is short for visible light transmission, and once you know what it’s measuring, the whole percentage system stops being confusing. It’s the share of visible light that passes through the combination of your glass and the film applied to it: not heat, not glare specifically, and not how “dark” the film reads to the eye, although darkness and VLT usually track together. Just light.
That 25%-versus-90% split above is the only number you need to memorize. Once you have it, every percentage on a sample card tells you something concrete instead of a vague word like “moderate.” The National Fenestration Rating Council (NFRC) standardizes how manufacturers test and label VLT, so a 35% film performs the same regardless of brand.
Why a Light Film Can Block Almost as Much UV as a Dark One
UV blocking is the part that surprised me most when I was shopping for film, and it’s the single most useful thing in this post: how dark a film reads has almost nothing to do with how much UV it blocks.
The Assumption Worth Correcting
When you're comparing films, check the UV rejection spec on its own, separate from the VLT number. Look for third-party verification, like the Skin Cancer Foundation's Seal of Recommendation, which requires 99% or more UVA/UVB blocking. A dark sample isn't automatically the safer one.
UV blocking comes from a dedicated UV-absorbing layer built into the film, engineered separately from whatever controls the visible light transmission. A nearly clear 70% VLT film can block close to the same share of UV rays as a 5% VLT film that looks like a limo window. Quality residential films across the whole VLT range commonly block 99% or more of UV.
You don’t have to take my word for it. The Skin Cancer Foundation runs a Seal of Recommendation program that requires products to block at least 99% of UVA and UVB rays, verified by third-party lab testing, and it’s been awarded to clear, high-VLT products right alongside dark ones. Plenty of tint marketing implies darker automatically means safer. It doesn’t. If UV protection is your main reason for tinting, you can pick the VLT that suits the room and still get the protection.

Once you know what the number measures, the next question is what it actually feels like standing in the room. Here’s how I’d describe the common bands, based on the samples I looked at:

VLT is about light coming through, so view the sample with daylight behind it, not just under a store's overhead lights.

Picking VLT Room by Room, Not Just by Room Name
Most tint guides stop short of real reasoning: they’ll tell you “50% for living areas, 20% for bedrooms” and leave it there. That’s a label swapped for a room name, not reasoning. What actually decides the right VLT is how the room gets used, and how much privacy, glare control, and fade protection it needs, not what it’s called on the floor plan.
A room that’s occupied all day, my kitchen and home office both qualify, usually feels too dim below 20% VLT. A film that steals too much daylight just makes you flip on lights, which defeats half the point of tinting. A bedroom used mainly at night is different: since you’re rarely in there during peak sun, you can go darker without noticing the tradeoff.
Then there’s a third factor that has nothing to do with when you’re in the room: what’s in it. A room full of upholstered furniture, wood flooring, or a rug you care about benefits from a lower VLT than its occupancy alone would suggest, since visible light contributes to fading right alongside UV.
The same logic applies to houseplants near a tinted window. I learned this after cutting the light in my own sunroom more than I meant to. Does a lower VLT percentage mean better UV or fade protection? It depends on which half you mean. UV blocking is separate from VLT, so a lighter film with real UV rejection protects just as well as a dark one. Fade protection isn’t: visible light itself causes fading, so a lower VLT does help protect furniture, flooring, and rugs.
What VLT works best for a room that gets sun all day? The right VLT for a sun-heavy room depends on what you’re protecting against. A room you’re in constantly usually wants to stay above 20% VLT so it doesn’t feel like a cave, though a room full of fade-prone furniture might be worth a lower band anyway.
Is there a legal minimum darkness for home window tint? Not the way there is for vehicles. Residential film darkness generally isn’t regulated by state law, though an HOA may have its own rules worth checking first.
